About Anna Alves
Anna Alves’ writing has been published in academic and literary journals, online ‘zines and encyclopedias. She’s taught English Composition to first-year university students, college courses in Asian American history and literature, and an after-school high school creative writing class. In a former life, she was a foundation professional as a Program Associate with The Ford Foundation in NYC and as Program Manager at the Asian Pacific Fund in San Francisco. A past PEN America Emerging Voices Fellow, she has received writing residencies at Hedgebrook, Voices of Our Nation’s Arts (VONA), the Kundiman Asian American Literary Workshop, and the N.V.M. & Narita Gonzalez Transpacific Writers Workshop (Manila, Philippines). A lifelong UCLA Bruin and fervent Los Angeles Dodgers fan, she was a US Fulbright scholar in the Philippines in 2018-2019 and taught an undergraduate fiction workshop at the Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City, Philippines. She earned her BA, English and History, and MA, Asian American Studies, from UCLA, and MFA, Creative Writing, from Rutgers University at Newark, where she is also a doctoral candidate in the American Studies PhD program.
What I've done
Besides publishing short fiction and academic pieces, I have:
- Served as Managing Copy Editor of the international, peer-reviewed literary journal Kritika Kultura, produced by the Ateneo de Manila University English Department.
- Worked as an interview transcriber, editor, and documentation reporter on collaborative teams that helped generate books focused on hip-hop aesthetics (Who We Be: The Colorization of America by Jeff Chang and Total Chaos: The Art and Aesthetics of Hip-Hop, ed. by Jeff Chang).
- Coordinated and drafted foundation reports in the national U. S. arts and culture sector (“Case Study: The Living Word Project” for Report to the Association of Performing Arts Presenters’ Ensemble Theater Collaborations Grant Program 2005-2008 by Caron Atlas, et al.).
- Led writing projects on Filipino American arts, identity, and aesthetics (Towards A Cultural Community: Identity, Education and Stewardship in Filipino American Performing Arts by Reme Grefalda, Anna Alves, Lucy Burns and Theodore Gonzalves, 2003, the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) with support from The Ford Foundation) and have particular expertise in the history and production of Pilipino Cultural Nights (PCNs), which was the subject of my masters’ thesis.
Who I work with
- Grad students or scholars who need an evaluative editor, copyeditor and/or proofreader for their academic theses, dissertation chapters, and/or draft journal articles.
- Creative writers that need professional editing/feedback for their short stories, creative pieces, and/or novel chapters/manuscripts.
- Beginning or intermediate writers and/or first-generation undergrad and grad students/scholars/writers to mentor, support, and bolster their writing process toward their desired intellectual and creative goals.
- Students and youth interested in learning about Filipino Writing in English more intensively, particularly the intrinsic dynamics of the Philippine Literature in English (Philippines) and Filipino/a/x American Literature (US) literary traditions.
- Non-profit arts and cultural organizations to develop grant proposals and/or program initiatives as a grant writer/consultant/advisor.
